Karlheinz Stockhausen

Well, fuck that.

Another hero gone.

Fond memories about a trip to Berlin with my best friend and another fella to Berlin, late seventies, early eighties perhaps… We just wanted to buy avant-garde records which weren’t available in Belgium at that time.
At least one Stockhausen record was one of the goals. And we succeeded. Gloriously.

Damn. Sad to see the Good People go.

Hey, you’re back!

And Karlheinz has gone back to Sirius.

He was my introduction to the avant-garde. When I was about 14, we used to hang around at an older guy’s house listening to his amazing record collection. Lots of stuff like U2, The Monochrome Set, Brian Eno, which was all very new to me, but then he also had this amazing looking Deutsche Grammophon gatefold record of Stockhausen’s opera “Sirius”. One day I persuaded him to play it. I don’t have strong memories of it, other than the weird voice near the beginning, but it was the starting point on a long and exciting journey.

I just tracked down a copy and listened again - it still sounds very familiar, 24 years on. Will be playing the first 20 minutes or so on my radio show on Tuesday.
